Film Is Not Dead

I'm sure some of you would disagree. I'm sure many people don't know what 35mm even is. But that is ok. That is why Jonathan Canlas aka the smartest man alive,  has this work shop. Its not exclusive to professional photographers, its open to all who want to learn about the medium.

I think it is sad that beginning photo classes are diving right into digital. Where is the fun in that? You miss the chemical smells, test strips, loading film backwards or opening the camera back mid roll. Going back to film and the basics of this work shop was just like going home. Like back to real slurpees and poutines.

This work shop was amazing. I gave up my crutch of seeing the photo instantly and instead relied solely on a light meter and manual focus.  It was so liberating and terrifying. It is so much fun to be in a community of like minded people who have the same values of photography. Its the workshop that keeps giving. I'm part of the FIND family, 254 members and growing.

The blog posts for the rest of the month will be from this work shop. The days went like this: DELICIOUS food, lecture, DELICIOUS food, hands on photo shoot, hang out, times three days. At each shoot there were at least two sets of subjects we would break into groups and rotate through all the sets. Needless to say by day three baby was well fed and I had been a sponge and soaked up all the knowledge I could.

I love film. It is honest, pure, straight forward.

  1. I agree, some colleges are stopping film altogether in their photography departments and I simply can't believe that. I understand not all people like to use film but as a photographer I think you have to start out that way, or at least learn it. So sad.
